Legendary radio DJ dies

Veteran DJ John Peel, 65, has died after suffering a heart attack.

Peel was BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ and had been on the British station since its inception.

Radio 1 controller Andy Parfitt said his contribution to modern music and culture was "immeasurable" and added: "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death, as are all who work at Radio 1. John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades. He will be hugely missed."

Peel made his name championing up-and-coming bands across four decades. He helped launch the careers of rock 'n' roll icons across a diverse spectrum.
