U2 reunited with lost lyrics
U2 are thrilled after a briefcase containing notes and lyrics for their 1981 release "October" has found its way back to the band after it was stolen backstage in Portland, Oregon 23 years ago.
Bono said the return was "an act of grace" and, speaking to waiting journalists, he again expressed his joy, saying "You will never know how much that means to me." He announced the return of the briefcase while addressing the World Affairs Council of Oregon.
The theft of the case meant that Bono had to rewrite all his lyrics for the second album, "October", which has been described by members of the band as U2’s worst ever recording experience.
The band had asked for the return of the briefcase when they revisited Portland to play a gig, but no one came forward with any idea where it may be. Bono repeated the question at the Rose Garden arena when the band played in 2001, again to avail.
However, Danielle Rheaume contacted U2’s management team and told them she believes her friend was in possession of a briefcase belonging to the band. She was correct and the case was handed over by Cindy Harris who found it way back in 1981 in a rental home attic, but she never suspected it was stolen until many years later, and even then, she didn’t know how to contact the band to reunite them.
U2 release new album, "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb", on November 22nd.
