"Highway To Hell" ad banned

A father in Australia who lobbied to have a car commercial pulled from the air has called for ads to be screened before consumers see them.

Australian resident Brett Ford lost his 18-year-old daughter, Lauren, when the Holden Astra in which she was a passenger smashed into a power pole at Camden in April.

After his loss, Mr Ford said he was distraught to be confronted by a television ad he felt promoted bad driving behaviour. The commercial featured clouds of smoke from screeching tyres and the AC/DC song Highway to Hell.

Mr Ford logged onto the Advertising Standards Bureau's website and filed a complaint that was upheld by its board a month later.

Bureau Chairman Robert Koltai said the ad was pulled after a number of complaints: "The Board gave a lot of consideration to the public complaints received in relation to this particular advertisement," he said. "And we ultimately found it in contravention of the code governing motor vehicle advertising."
