Pink Floyd to play Live 8
The original members of legendary Pink Floyd will reunite for the first time in over 20 years to play at the London concert of Live 8 on July 2. "Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," Gilmour said. "It's crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations."
This would be Pink Floyd's first performance - with the original lineup, in more than two decades. Guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason, bassist Roger Waters and keyboard player Richard Wright broke up in the early 1980s due to personality clashes between Waters and the rest of the band. Waters, the founder, last played with the group in 1981 though other members continued to perform until recently.
The Live 8 concerts are being staged to raise awareness and press G8 leaders to increase aid, cancel debts and make trade fair for the world's poorest countries. Shows will rock London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris, Rome and Edinburgh, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators, while billions more are expected to watch on television.
Among the already confirmed performers for the event are also Paul McCartney, The Who, U2, Bon Jovi and Velvet Revolver.
