Ringo Starr tapes special gig

Ringo Starr and his band the Roundheads performed a special concert at Waukegan, Illinois' Genesee Theatre last Friday (June 25, 2005), for a PBS special which will air in October in America. Ringo performed Beatles favorites such as "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Yellow Submarine," as well "Don't Pass Me By," the first song he ever wrote for the group, which he performed partially on keyboards before returning to center stage.

Ringo performed several solo songs, including the title track of his latest CD, Choose Love and "It Don't Come Easy." He also played "I'm The Greatest," the 1973 tune written for him by John Lennon. The recording of the tune features lead guitar by George Harrison, and ended up being the closet the Beatles ever got to reuniting before Lennon's murder in 1980.

Ringo's producer and Roundheads bandleader Mark Hudson has been recording with Ringo since shortly after he conquered his substance abuse problems in the late '80s. Hudson told us that it was Ringo's sobriety that led to the resurgence of his recording career:
