Sixth Live 8 concert in Edinburgh
A sixth Live 8 concert will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, Midge Ure announced earlier this week. The former Ultravox frontman confirmed that Dido, Travis, Wet Wet Wet, Texas, The Thrills, Snow Patrol, Annie Lennox and the Proclaimers will play Scotland's Live 8 show on July 6. The concert will be held four days after the other five Live 8 shows in London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome.
Several thousands are expected to attend the Edinburgh Live 8 concert at Murrayfield stadium which can hold up to 90,000 as a music venue. The anti-poverty concert takes place on the same day as the G8 summit, which is being held in Gleneagles which is very close to Edinburgh.
The free Scottish Live 8 concert also coincides with The Long Walk to Justice Rally in Edinburgh on July 6. Sir Bob Geldof, the rock star turned anti-poverty activist, has called for a million protesters to march on the city - and has refused to tone down this appeal, even after the city's police and civic leaders warned that the event would cripple the city and could spiral out of control.
The Live 8 concerts are being staged to raise awareness and press G8 leaders to increase aid, cancel debts and make trade fair for the world's poorest countries.
