Garfunkel charged with pot possession
For the second time in less than two years, Art Garfunkel has been charged with marijuana possession. The singer was pulled over by a state trooper after blowing through a stop sign in Woodstock, New York, on Sunday (August 28th). The officer noted "a strong odor of marijuana" from the car, and a search turned up a marijuana cigarette in the ashtray of the 2005 Buick, according to The (Kingston, New York) Daily Freeman. Garfunkel was issued a ticket and is due back in Woodstock Town Court on September 22nd.In January 2004, in the same county as the new infraction, Garfunkel was charged with possession after cops found the drug on him when they pulled over a speeding limousine he was a passenger in. Garfunkel pled guilty a few weeks later and paid a $100 fine and $100 in court costs.
If he pleads guilty this time, his fine alone will be $200 because of the previous conviction, according to Ulster County District Attorney Donald A. Williams. The DA said, "I don't believe fining Art Garfunkel $200 will serve as a tremendous deterrent," but he added that a third conviction could lead to a 15-day jail sentence.
