Over 50 artists in Katrina benefit
Over 50 musical acts performed Saturday night (September 10th) during the ReAct Now: Music And Relief benefit show that aired between 8:00 P.M. and approximately 12:15 A.M. on MTV, VH1, CMT and all other MTV Networks channels. Artists either performed in studios in Los Angeles, Nashville, or New York, or else allowed portions of their concerts that night in other cities to be broadcast on the program. Viewers were encouraged to donate money to relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast region two weeks ago.
The list of performers spanned rock, pop, hip-hop and other musical genres, including Coldplay, U2, Audioslave, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, Kelly Clarkson, Ciara, Sheryl Crow, Xzibit, Good Charlotte, Green Day, the Dave Matthews Band, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, John Mayer, Maroon5, Rob Thomas, Kanye West and others.
A number of artists who appeared, such as Randy Jackson and Allen Toussaint, are New Orleans residents and have deep musical roots in the decimated city.
The show opened with Alicia Keys singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the musical Carousel, and closed four hours later with Neil Young performing Fats Domino's "Walking To New Orleans."
Many artists played songs that either paid tribute to the region, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kid Rock's collaboration on Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama," while other acts performed tunes that seemed appropriate in context, like Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and Reznor's "Hurt."
Audioslave's Tom Morello told MTV.com why his band was there: "It was a terrible natural disaster but an even greater human catastrophe."
Rapper Xzibit told MTV.com why he could relate to the suffering of residents in the affected area: "I have a 10-year-old son, and to see people his age not in a Third World country, but right here in the U.S., digging through trash two days with no food or water, trying to find something to eat and pick it off the ground...(that) was very disturbing, and I will never forget that."
