Velvet Revolver drummer posts message

Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum has posted a message to the group's fans online, in which he discussed the recent hand injury that prevented him from playing with the band on the last leg of its 2005 North American tour. Sorum wrote in part, "It was very hard for me to sit on the sidelines while my band went out on the road without me. But it's what they had to do and with my blessing...I am doing well and on the road to recovery. Nonetheless, I really missed all of you fans."

The drummer fractured his right hand while water skiing near his mother's house on Lake Havasu, near the Colorado River. Drummers Brian Tichy and Mark Schulman filled in for him on the band's last run of shows.

Although it was initially thought that he would miss only a few dates, doctors determined that he would need surgery and more time to recuperate, forcing him to sit out Velvet Revolver's co-headlining stint on the last seven dates of this summer's OzzFest.

Sorum admitted that the prospect of surgery shook him because "I had never dealt with any trauma to my hands before. The drums are my life and this scared me."

The former Guns N' Roses drummer concluded by thanking the fans for their support, adding that he couldn't wait to begin making Velvet Revolver's second album.

Velvet Revolver's 2004 debut, Contraband, was recently certified double platinum for sales of more than two million copies. The band expects to start work on its follow-up this autumn.

In related news, Slash will join ex-Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, along with members of the Black Eyed Peas, Quiet Riot, Toto, Heart and others, this Sunday (September 25th) for a benefit show at the Key Club in Hollywood, California. Proceeds will go to the Rock N' Roll Relief Fund for Hurricane Katrina victims.
