Coldplay unveil new American tour

Coldplay have announced the dates for its next North American tour, which is scheduled to kick off on January 25th in Vancouver, Canada. According to Billboard, the dates will run through early April. A special web site called TalkTheTour.com has been launched to reveal the tour dates, with a new show put up for every 33,000 hits at the site. All but two Los Angeles-area dates were confirmed by yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, November 9th).

The trek will support the band's latest album, X&Y, and their current single, "Talk." Singer Chris Martin told us how the band adapted a melody from the song "Computer Love," by German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, into the track: "I was lying on my bed one day last summer, listening to this Kraftwerk song, thinking, 'This is an amazing melody, and I wish I could hear Jonny (Buckland, guitarist) play it. So I called him up and he came over and he played it, you know, and then we wrote to Kraftwerk and asked their permission. We wrote them a real fan letter, and they said yes, and then we got this song, you know. I can't quite believe that they let us do it, but it just seemed to me to be a cool idea, you know."

Fiona Apple will open the first half of the tour, while Richard Ashcroft will handle the opening slot for the second half.

TalkTheTour.com is staging a contest for fans who register at the site in which the grand prize winner will receive a phone call from Martin, along with front row seats to a Coldplay show and a chance to attend the 2006 Grammy Awards. 25 runners-up will get to participate in a conference call with the entire band.

Coldplay will appear on Late Night With Conan O'Brien on December 7th.
