Flashback: Freddie Mercury dies

It was this week 14 years ago that Freddie Mercury died of AIDS-related bronchopneumonia in his home in Kensington in London aged 45.

Born Farrokh Bulsara, the charismatic performer joined forces with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor to form Queen in 1970.

With the addition of bassist John Deacon, the British band achieved great musical success through a consistent period of 20 years. Popular songs Mercury penned include Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Killer Queen, Somebody to Love and We are the Champions.

His unparalleled stage presence and vocal abilities make him one of the greatest Rock and Roll frontmen of all time. Live Aid in 1985 was his finest hour. Performing live with Queen to a TV audience of over a billion, he secured his place in history, as most fans and critics agreed: Freddie Mercury and Queen stole the show.
