Franz Ferdinand coming soon...?

Franz Ferdinand have already written a batch of songs for their third album, and plans to enter the studio and begin recording some of them in January. But singer Alex Kapranos told us he's not sure when the band's next album will arrive:

As a group we've always gone on our gut instincts for what feels right, what feels the most appropriate way to do things next. There's already new songs that are coming together that we're probably going to introduce into the live set, and so, yeah, maybe we'll put some of them out, maybe we'll wait. I don't know."

Kapranos said on Friday (December 16th) that the songs he and guitarist Nick McCarthy have already written are different from anything the band has done before, explaining, "The songs are a lot grander - less spiky than anything we've done previously...That's what some of the new stuff is sounding like. But of course, it's still us."

Kapranos said that the band has 14 new songs in various stages of development, and has been playing five of them during soundchecks on tour.

Franz Ferdinand's second album, You Could Have It So Much Better, just came out in October. It features the singles "Do You Want To" and "The Fallen."

The group is currently doing shows in Italy and Spain, and will appear on Australia and New Zealand's Big Day Out festival in late January and early February.
