Metallica drummer: Mustaine is pathetic

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has slammed former band-mate Dave Mustaine over comments Mustaine made about his brief appearance in the 2004 documentary, Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster. In the latest issue of So What!, the Metallica fan club magazine, Ulrich said he was "saddened" by Mustaine's views on the film, explaining, "I still say today that those moments in the film were incredibly strong and incredibly emotional and powerful. And I'm certainly proud of my part in that. I'm a little perplexed by his reaction, but also a little mistrusting of it."

Mustaine called his scenes in the film, in which he confronts Ulrich in a hotel room, a "final betrayal" and requested that they be removed from the movie. Ulrich said at the time of the film's release that he couldn't believe Mustaine had harbored such bad feelings toward Metallica after so many years:

Ulrich added that there was "a funny parallel between Dave Mustaine's Metalli-bashing and the releasing of a new record of his...X percentage of the press around a new Megadeth release simply becomes about Metallica, which is, you know, sad and pathetic."

Mustaine released a new Megadeth album, The System Has Failed, in September of 2004, two months after Some Kind Of Monster arrived in theatres.

Mustaine was a member of Metallica in 1982 and early '83, and did not play on any albums by the band.

Ulrich said in the same interview that Metallica will stick with producer Bob Rock on its next album, despite recent rumors of a collaboration with Rick Rubin. The group has reportedly begun working on material for the disc, with an expected release date later this year or early in 2007.
