U2's Bono nominated for Nobel prize
U2 frontman Bono has been nominated for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. He stands alongside 191 fellow nominees, including Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof, former US Secretary of State and mastermind of the Iraq war, Colin Powell, and ex-New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. The winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize will be announced in October and receive a $1.3 million award at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway on December 10th.Last year's award went to the International Atomic Energy Agency and its leader, Mohamed El Baradei.
Bono is well-known for his humanitarian efforts to erase poverty, debt and disease in developing countries. Just last week, he visited Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and donated a guitar for auction to benefit his Zero Hunger anti-poverty program.
U2 will perform in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday (March 1st).
