David Gilmour always planned album
Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmour recently released a solo album called On An Island. It's the third one he's made, and the first since About Face came out in 1984. Some people wondered if Gilmour would ever make another solo record, but he told us he never had any doubt about it: [

So when I got started on this, the end result in my mind always was going to be an album. But we didn't really knuckle down with that end in mind, and with any sort of timeline in our minds, until about last May." Fans haven't held a grudge about the long wait between albums. On An Island is at Number One in the UK, Italy, and Norway and entered the Billboard 200 chart this week at Number Six.
The guitarist hasn't been sitting home alone for the 22 years since his last solo album. He's toured and recorded with Pink Floyd, and he's also worked with Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Warren Zevon, Elton John, Ringo Starr, and Alan Parsons, among others.
Gilmour's in the midst of a European tour that wraps up March 26th in Rome. His North American dates begin April 4th in New York City.
