The Beatles' Las Vegas show due in June

The new Las Vegas theatrical collaboration between the Beatles and Cirque du Soleil will begin preview performances on June 2nd. The show, simply titled LOVE, will open with a gala premiere on June 30th for its residency at the Mirage hotel. The show marks the first time that the Beatles have allowed their music to be used in a major theatrical venture. The Beatles-themed show, which is not a musical in the traditional sense, features an "international cast of 60 (who) channel a raw, youthful energy underscored by aerial performance, extreme sports and urban, freestyle dance." Tickets run from $70 to $150. Log on to the cirquedusoleil.com website for more information.

The Beatles' longtime producer George Martin and his son Giles are serving as the show's musical directors, and have been remixing portions of the Beatles catalogue to be incorporated into the production. Martin said in a statement that "After spending more than 40 years of my life working with the Beatles and their wonderful music, I am thrilled to be working with it once again... The show will be a unique and magical experience."

Son Giles added that: "I think we will achieve a real sense of drama with the music, the audience will feel as though they are actually in the theater with the band. People are going to be knocked out by what they are hearing!"

LOVE will be presented in a custom-built theatre at the Mirage, featuring 360-degree seating, a panoramic surround sound system, and advanced high definition video projections with 100-foot digital, moving images.

The production, which is over six years in the making, was originally spearheaded by the late George Harrison and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte. In 2000, during one of their last public outings together, Harrison and Paul McCartney flew to Las Vegas to catch a Cirque du Soleil performance.

Although the surviving Beatles, McCartney and Ringo Starr, are involved with the project, neither one will be performing or recording new music for the show.

The show is being produced by the Beatles' company Apple, which is jointly owned by McCartney and Starr along with John Lennon and George Harrison's widows, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison.

There's been no word on a possible release date for the LOVE Original Soundtrack album.
