John Lennon schoolbook fetches $270k
A schoolbook featuring John Lennon's childhood doodlings and poems sold for $270,000 at Cooper Owen's rock memorabilia auction in London on Wednesday (April 19th). The Associated Foreign Press reported that the 10-page red book titled "My Anthology," from when Lenon was 12 years old, featured a drawing of a walrus, which was inspired by one of his favorite poems, Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus And The Carpenter." In 1967, Lenon used the imagery from Carroll's poem as the main inspiration for the Beatles song "I Am The Walrus." Among the other notable Lennon items snagged by collectors was his engraved silver christening bracelet, which sold for over $48,000. The bracelet is considered the earliest known piece of Lennon memorabilia.
A letter from Paul McCartney to Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr failed to meet its reserve bid of nearly $89,000.
Other top sellers at the auction included a 1966 12-string Rickenbacker guitar originally owned by the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, which sold for over $195,000.
