Nickelback pay tribute to Dimebag
Nickelback's most recent live show featured a tribute to slain Pantera and Damageplan guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, footage of which can now be seen at YouTube.com. According to Blabbermouth.net, the band's performance each night of a song called "Side Of A Bullet" featured video clips of Abbott projected on a large screen onstage. The tune itself features a lead guitar solo by Abbott that was edited together from several studio outtakes compiled by Abbott's longtime girlfriend, Rita Haney.
Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger told us about the first time he played the song for Abbott's brother and drummer, Vinnie Paul: "I called Vinnie. The conversation started off going, 'Hey, you know, how are things, I hope you're doing all right, and, you know, I want to play something for you over the phone, tell me what you think.' I play him the tune and I'm telling him that it's this very Pantera-inspired riff. And then he says, 'You know what, dude, you gotta write one for Dime.' I said, 'Well, that's what the song's about, and I kinda want to get your blessing on it.' And he's like, 'Brother, of course you have my blessing.'"
"Side Of A Bullet" was written three months after Abbott was shot to death by a disturbed gunman during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio on December 8th, 2004.
The track appears on the band's most recent album, All The Right Reasons.
Nickelback completed a U.S. tour last month in support of All The Right Reasons, which has sold more than 2.5 million copies since its release last October. The CD's latest single is called 'Savin' Me." The group heads to Australia later this month.
