U2 leader saluted by Jesse Helms
U2 frontman Bono is saluted in the new issue of Time magazine for fighting against AIDS in Africa. What's surprising is where the tribute is coming from -- former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms, who's probably about as far away from Bono politically as you can get. Helms was one of the most conservative Republicans in the Senate, but he and Bono were able to work together on AIDS reduction. Helms wrote, "I had met enough people to quickly figure out who is genuine and who is there for show. I knew as soon as I met Bono that he was genuine... he didn't have any agenda other than doing all he could to help people in desperate need... (Bono) helped me understand the scope of the tragedy in Africa, especially the pain it is bringing to infants and children and their families."Helms added, "I admire Bono's dedication and his willingness to make decisions. There is no pretense about him. In fact, he has opened himself up to criticism because he ahs been willing to work with anyone to find help for these children."
