U2's Bono to guest edit UK newspaper
U2 singer Bono will guest edit the May 16th edition of British newspaper the Independent, according to the Guardian. The vocalist's guest editorial spot will be part of a media tie-in to support Product Red, an initiative to tackle AIDS in Africa. The Independent has agreed to donate half its revenues from sales of that edition of the paper to the Product Red campaign. The U2 frontman aims to use Product Red to get the corporate world involved in the struggle against AIDS on the African continent. More than 25 million people in Africa are HIV-positive, with 2 million expected to die this year.
The Gap, American Express, Converse and Giorgio Armani have all signed onto the campaign.
Independent editor Simon Kelner said that Bono "will produce a newspaper that, in the best traditions of the Independent, will be challenging, innovative and entertaining." The singer is already assigning articles for the issue.
Product Red is the brainchild of Bono and Bobby Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family and one of America's leading philanthropists.
