The Beach Boys release 40th anniversary edition of Pet Sounds
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the Beach Boys have just released a revamped version of their legendary Pet Sounds album. The package includes newly remastered mono and stereo mixes of the album, as well as a DVD featuring a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround sound mix and several featurettes, including an extended cut of the 1997 promotional film The Making Of Pet Sounds.
Also included on the Pet Sounds DVD are a featurette, titled Rhythm Of Life: Sir George Martin & Brian Wilson In The Studio, and the group's original promo films of "Good Vibrations," "Sloop John B," and "Pet Sounds."
We asked Mike Love about the truth of the legend that he constantly accused Brian Wilson of trying to be too ambitious with the group's records: "Well, people have said the same thing about Pet Sounds, that I didn't like Pet Sounds. That's a bunch of crap, because I went with Brian to play Pet Sounds for the A&R guy at Capitol Records. We played it for him, I named the album (laughs). Because at the end of the record, he didn't know what to call the record. And at the end of the record you have this dog barking at the sound of this train going by. And I said, 'Well, why don't we call it Pet Sounds?' Double entendre, of course."
Pet Sounds, which was released on May 16th, 1966, featured such Beach Boys classics as "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows" "Caroline No," "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," and "Sloop John B."
The Beach Boys, featuring Mike Love and longtime member Bruce Johnston, perform tonight (Thursday, August 31st) in Canfield, Ohio at the Canfield Fair.
