Bruce Springsteen denies break-up of marriage
Forget those rumors about the Bruce Springsteen/Patti Scialfa marriage being on the rocks. There's been a lot of chatter in recent months about the couple, and it heated up last week after a gossip item in the New York Post said Springsteen had moved out of the family house and had taken up with the widow of a September 11th victim. Springsteen rarely gets involved with addressing rumors, but he felt the need to issue a statement through the official brucespringsteen.net website:
"I hesitate to use this website for anything personal, believing it should remain a place where fans of my music can come free of the distractions that occasionally arise with the rest of my job. However, due to the unfounded and ugly rumors that have appeared in the papers over the last few days, I felt they shouldn't pass without comment. Patti and I have been together for 18 years -- the best 18 years of my life. We have built a beautiful family we love and want to protect, and our commitment to one another remains as strong as the day we were married."
According to legend, The Boss first met Scialfa when she tried to join the E Street Band for the tour in support of The River in 1980, but he turned her down because she was too young -- even though she was 27 at the time. She eventually became an E Streeter a few days before the start of the Born In The U.S.A. tour in 1984, and has remained with the band ever since. Her personal relationship with Springsteen became public during the Tunnel Of Love tour in 1987, while he was still married to model and actress Julianne Phillips -- coincidentally, it was 18 years ago today (August 30th, 1988) that Phillips filed for divorce from Springsteen, after embarrassing photographs were published of him and Scialfa in their underwear on a balcony in Italy.
Springsteen and Scialfa were married in June 1991, and they have three children -- Evan James, who was born in 1990; Jessica Rae, who came the following year; and Samuel Ryan, who was born in 1994.
There's been talk from The Boss about an E Street Band album being on his schedule, but he hasn't given any timetable for release.
