David Gilmour to perform with orchestra
David Gilmour has a special night planned for his concert in Gdansk, Poland, on August 26th. For their last tour date of the year, Gilmour and his band will be joined by a 38-piece orchestra led by Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, who wrote the orchestrations for Gilmour's recent album On An Island. Preisner and the classical musicians will back Gilmour on the On An Island tracks, and they might also stick around to flesh out some Pink Floyd songs, though that hasn't been locked in. There have been rumors of the concert being shot for release on DVD, but that doesn't appear to be the case at this point. The concert will be held in the Gdansk Shipyard, where the Polish labor union and political movement known as Solidarity got its start. The Pink Floyd legend was invited to play Gdansk by Solidarity leader and former Polish President Lech Walesa to mark the 26th anniversary of the union being founded. He said, "Myself and millions of others will forever associate Solidarity with the dramatic events of 1989 and remember the courage and determination of its members to bring democracy to Poland. It will be the first time that I've played a concert in Poland and I'm looking forward to it very much."
