Korn and Deftones members speak out on recent fan death
Korn guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer and Deftones singer Chino Moreno have commented on the death of a fan at the July 30th date of the two bands' Family Values tour in Atlanta. 30-year-old Andrew Richardson suffered a fatal brain injury and died after being knocked to the ground during an argument at the show. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Shaffer said, "We were real sad," adding that concerts were not "the safest place to go, no matter who you are. Last night onstage I got hit in the back with a quarter, also with a cellphone. I get (stuff) thrown at me all night long."
Moreno said, "I always make a point, when we're playing, if I see someone fighting we'll stop the song and tell them to chill out. Then we'll continue with the music. The music is secondary to people's safety."
Police in Atlanta arrested Michael Scott Axley two weeks ago, charging him with assault and murder in the case. According to those who saw the attack, Richardson asked Axley to be careful around his pregnant girlfriend and a mentally challenged child accompanying them. Axley allegedly then punched Richardson in the head, sending him head-first into the concrete. Richardson never regained consciousness and died two days later.
The Family Values tour, which also features Stone Sour, 10 Years, Flyleaf and others, continues on Thursday, August 24th, in Kansas City, Missouri.
