Mars Volta consider Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist an honorary member

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante may be doing a bit of double duty on the group's current North American tour. In addition to his regular gig, Frusciante has performed on the he last two albums by opening act The Mars Volta -- last year's Frances The Mute and the upcoming Amputechture. The Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez told us that he and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala consider Frusciante to be an honorary member of their band: "He's always welcome to be part of the band. He's so part of the energy of what the band is and gets along so well with everyone and, I mean, he's my closest friend next to Cedric, so for me it's so great and comfortable to having him around."

The tour began on Friday, August 11th, at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon.

There's been no official word on whether Frusciante will appear onstage during The Mars Volta's opening sets, however.

Amputechture, The Mars Volta's third album, comes out September 12th.
