2006 MTV music video awards coverage

The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, held last night (August 31st) at New York City's Radio City Music Hall in Rockefeller Center, didn't have all the excitement or edginess of previous years, and there was no big winner of the evening. Only two artists received more than one "moonman" -- James Blunt, who won Best Male Video and Best Cinematography for "You're Beautiful," and Gnarls Barkley, who won Best Direction and Best Editing for "Crazy."

There was only one moment that seemed to approach the craziness of previous years, when a man jumped onstage when Panic! At The Disco was receiving the Video Of The Year Award, and launched into an incoherent tirade about not having his own show on MTV, before he was removed by security.

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira, who led the field with seven nominations each, took home only one award apiece. Shakira won for Best Choreography in a Video, for her hit with Wyclef Jean, "Hips Don't Lie," and the Chili Peppers won Best Art Direction in a Video for "Dani California."

A manic Jack Black hosted the evening, with a running gag storyline about "bringing the thunder," and a side gag about leaving his Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass behind, which culminated in a mock dressing-room confrontation and reconciliation, followed by a Tenacious D performance about the joys of their friendship. There was also a side gag about Justin Timberlake constructing much-needed shelves in Jack Black's dressing room.

Other comic relief was provided by the cast of Jackass Two, including the at-one-point-naked dwarf Wee-Man, performing stupid stunts such as shocking someone with a telephone, and letting a lobster pinch Steve-O's tongue. And when they presented Fall Out Boy with the Viewer's Choice Award, there were a number of crotch-kicks aimed at the band.

The Raconteurs, the side band of White Stripes leader Jack White, were the house band for the evening, filling in between other performances, and performing with some other stars.

The recently-released-from-prison Lil' Kim also made a public re-appearance clad in an orange jumpsuit, which she then stripped to show off a black pantsuit with a gold corset.

A hoarse Jessica Simpson, who recently lost her voice, presented the Best Dance Video with a sexy, raspy voice, and wearing a tiny, swimsuit-like black dress.

Estranged best friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were both onstage as presenters, appearing within ten minutes of each other, but weren't seen together.

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline appeared on tape announcing Best R&B Video, in a comic bit that had them sniping at each other and realizing they had misplaced their baby.

Al Gore appeared to make a brief speech about global warming.

Axl Rose appeared briefly at the end of the show to introduce the Killers.

PERFORMANCES:

During the pre-show, Fergie performed her hit "London Bridge" outside on the red carpet

Also during the pre-show, My Chemical Romance performed "The Black Parade" on top of the GE Building at Rockefeller Center, with the lights of Manhattan spread out around them.

Justin Timberlake opened the official show with "My Love," and transitioned into "SexyBack."

The Raconteurs performed "White Light White Heat" with Lou Reed.

Shakira and Wyclef Jean performed "Hips Don't Lie," with an Indian-themed group of belly dancers.

Ludacris and Pharrell performed "money maker."

OK Go performed "Here It Goes Again" the way they did in the video for the song, in an elaborate dance taking place on treadmills.

The All-American Rejects performed "Move Along."

Beyonce's performance of "Ring The Alarm" was one of the evening's most visual, a large production number with sirens and policemen, and a group of trenchcoated dancers.

T.I. performed a bit of his hit "Shoulder Lean," going into "What You Know."

Panic! At the Disco performed a large-scale production number of "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" with a cast of dancers in elaborate Edwardian costumes.

A video-and-performance tribute to video director Hype Williams featured richly colored tribal dancers and drummers performing Busta Rhymes' "Put Ur Hands Where My Eyes Could See," and then Missy Elliott's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)."

Christina Aguilera did an elegant performance of her single "Hurt."

Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top performed "Cheap Sunglasses" with the Raconteurs.

The Killers closed the show with a performance of "When You Were Young."
