Doors members say their music is just as relevant today
The music of the Doors meant a great deal to people when it was released in the '60s, and the band's members says it's just as important today. The Doors are using modern techniques to reach a young audience, including the myspace.com website and making their music available as ringtones for cell phones, and guitarist Robbie Krieger said, "A lot of kids don't even realize we're from the '60s. It's cool that our sound is perceived as that contemporary. We're turning new people on to the Doors and also bringing the Doors to a more diverse audience."
Drummer John Densmore said, "We stood for something. We still do. Somebody's got to!"
Keyboardist Ray Manzarek also said, "The Doors are absolutely and completely relevant today because we represent freedom. When you are at that point in your life where you've left childhood but not yet put on the yoke of adulthood, we represent totally liberating artistic, literary, and spiritual freedom. We're about opening the doors of perception in the closed-in, locked-up times we live in now." He added, "The ultimate way to spread peace and joy is one person by one person by one person, and that's what we're trying to do for our 40th anniversary celebration."
The Doors have a number of projects in the works to mark the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, including the authorized biography called The Doors By The Doors that comes out November 7th; a 12-disc box set called Perception that's due November 21st; and a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, which will be presented next year.
