Mickey Hart reactivates Planet Drum
Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart has reactivated his Planet Drum collective for a short tour this fall. The group, which has been dormant for nearly 10 years, will play a handful of dates on the West Coast later this month, and more could be added. The tour features Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo, all of whom played on the Planet Drum album in 1991 that won the first-ever World Music Grammy Award. As only he can, Hart said, "We're taking the archaic rhythm worlds into outer space. Planet Drum explores rhythm and noise... it's a sound yoga of processed acoustic percussion headed straight for the trance zone that becomes a dance of ancient and modern worlds. Deep drumming is a skeleton key into these realms." Hart and Hussain have been friends and collaborators since the late '60s.
