Mike Love defends his lawsuit against Brian Wilson

Mike Love says that he doesn't mind being thought of as the heavy in the Beach Boys' world, if it helps protect the franchise. Love recently lost two separate lawsuits against Beach Boys co-founders Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, both for what he felt was wrongfully utilizing or exploiting the band's name and likeness. Love told The Edmonton Sun that, "(Co-founder) Carl (Wilson) passed away so he's not in a position to do much. His heirs are participants in the company that owns the Beach Boys name and so with Carl not being there, if Al does something we feel is detrimental, then that needs to be addressed -- and I don't mind addressing it."

Last week, Love's suit against Jardine for touring under the name Beach Boys Family & Friends was thrown out of court. Love claimed that he alone held the exclusive license to the Beach Boys name.

Love also lost out on a suit which claimed that Wilson had used Love and the band's image to promote a British freebie CD given away in the press. Love claimed that Wilson's management have pressured him into business decisions: "I think the people around Brian have caused him to do things that he probably wasn't totally aware of... I think Brian is pretty much oblivious to a lot of things that go on. That's my assumption, anyway, and he's guileless enough to go ahead and ask me, 'We ought to get together and write.'"

Mike Love told us that once his business problems with Wilson are finally sorted out, he would like nothing more than to begin writing with Wilson again: "I tend to favor the idea of working with my cousin Brian, 'cause I know his musical strengths and I know what my strengths are and they happen to compliment each other extremely well. So I've always been open to doing something with Brian, and we'll just see how it goes. So if things can get resolved that need to be resolved then, I have no problem whatsoever in getting together with Brian. Just Brian. Because that's where the magic happened when he and I would sit around a piano and bang something out."

Last week Brian Wilson announced that Al Jardine would be joining him as his special guest during five Pet Sounds 40th anniversary concerts. The mini-tour kicks off on November 1st in Los Angeles at Royce Hall at UCLA.

The Beach Boys, featuring Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, perform on Thursday, September 21st, in Calgary at the South Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
