MTV Video Music Awards ratings plummet
Ratings for the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, which were broadcast live from New York City's Radio City Music Hall on Thursday night (August 31st), took a sharp dive from last year's, even though they still beat all challengers in their timeslot, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
About 5.8 million viewers tuned in to MTV for the show, which is a decline of 27% from last year, and about half of what the show drew four years ago. And in the network's target demo, which is people aged 12 to 34, the numbers declined by 31%.
MTV's online broadband platform Overdrive, however, posted its biggest day ever on Thursday, with 3.9 million streams.
The show was unpopular with critics as well, whose complaints ranged from host Jack Black's anemic gags, to a lack of compelling performances, to what seemed like an inadequately lighted Radio City Music Hall.
