U2 and Green Day perform together
Green Day and U2 teamed in a pre-game performance at the Superdome in New Orleans on September 25th as part of the stadium's reopening ceremonies after being closed for a year in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Prior to the ESPN Monday Night Football face-off between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons, the bands played a live version of their new collaboration, a cover of the 1978 song "The Saints Are Coming," by Scottish band the Skids. The performance started off with several verses of Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends," from their 2004 album American Idiot. Bono then sang several lines of the traditional "House of the Rising Sun," before transitioning into "The Saints Are Coming." The performance wrapped up with several verses of U2's "Beautiful Day," from the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind, with some rewritten lyrics about New Orleans. The two groups were joined onstage by members of a New Orleans brass band.
The two bands' collaborative recording of "The Saints Are Coming" is available for download as a benefit for Music Rising, an organization co-founded by U2 guitarist the Edge that replaces instruments lost by musicians as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
