U2 and Green Day recreate Abbey Road photo and perform together

Green Day and U2 staged an impromptu photo session on the street outside England's legendary Abbey Road studios last week to re-enact the famous cover photo from the Beatles' Abbey Road album. The two groups, who have been recording together at the studio, had a picture snapped of them meeting in the crosswalk outside the studio and shaking hands. It's not clear yet whether the shot, taken by longtime U2 photographer Anton Corbijn, will be used in conjunction with the track the bands have been collaborating on.

That song, a cover of "The Saints Are Coming" by Scottish act the Skids, will be premiered on Monday, September 25th, during a live pre-game performance by both bands at the Superdome in New Orleans as part of the stadium's official reopening ceremonies.

The concert, followed by the New Orleans Saints' game against the Atlanta Falcons, will air on ESPN's Monday Night Football. The performance will also be streamed and made available as a download by Rhapsody.

The Superdome was nearly destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina last year. The Saints have played home games in other parts of Louisiana while the facility has been rebuilt.

Green Day and U2's studio version of the track will benefit Music Rising, an organization co-founded by U2 guitarist The Edge that replaces instruments lost by musicians as a result of Hurricane Katrina.
