Audioslave guitarist arrested and released on bail
Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello was arrested on Thursday evening (September 28th) in Los Angeles during a march for immigrant hotel workers' rights. Morello was among approximately 400 protesters charged with unlawful assembly after they refused to move out of Century Boulevard, the main entry road to Los Angeles International Airport. About 2,000 people participated in the march, and participants willing to be arrested had actually given police their driver's license numbers beforehand to expedite processing. Morello spent the night in jail and was released Friday morning (September 29th) on $5,000 bail.
Morello, who performed before the rally as the Nightwatchman, told us why he feels it's important for average citizens to get involved in grassroots political activism and stand up for their rights: "As someone who's worked for a United States senator, I realize that there are inherent, fundamental flaws to the system, where power and profit are inextricably linked, that makes it very difficult for anyone in that sort of position to effect real progressive change. Real change, I believe, always comes from below."
According to march organizers, thousands of immigrant workers working at hotels in the area earn 20% less than hotel workers as a whole throughout the Los Angeles area. Many of the workers come from neighborhoods where one out of four families live below the poverty line.
Morello told MTV News before the march, "In these political dark ages, it's important for us to stand up for one another...We're here to express our solidarity with (the hotel workers), to help them unionize and to help them close the gap between their sub-poverty wages and the millions and millions of dollars the people who own these hotels make."
Audioslave's new album, Revelations, sits at Number 29 on the Billboard Top 200 after three weeks.
