Clash drummer now a chiropractor
While Clash singer-guitarist Mick Jones continues to make music, the band's original drummer has chosen a different path. Terry Chimes, who formed the group with Jones, singer-guitarist Joe Strummer, and bassist Paul Simonon, is now a chiropractor in Essex, England, and he doesn't miss the spotlight at all. Chimes told the BBC News Magazine, "People say how can you prefer treating patients to being on stage in front of 100,000 people? But if you can get someone healthy, there's a satisfaction in that which is much more profound." The only stage appearances that Chimes makes anymore are seminars for medical professionals, and he's putting together a book about health and well-being.
Chimes left the group after their first album, then returned for their stadium-tour era in the early '80s, but he quit again because issues between the members made it unpleasant. He went back to chiropractic school and didn't tell any of his fellow students about his past, but they spotted him in the video for "Should I Stay Or Should I Go." According to the report, Chimes' office is now one of the busiest in all of Europe.
A Clash exhibit has just opened at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland.
