Farm Aid 2006 rocks New Jersey
Farm Aid 2006 took place on Saturday (September 30th), with a sold out show at the Tweeter Center at the Waterfront in Camden, New Jersey, across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Headliners included Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews, with a number of opening acts and guest performers.
Some highlights of the show:
Willie Nelson's set was the musical high point and finale of the evening, including performances of "Crazy," "Whiskey River," "Good Hearted Woman," "Me & Bobby McGee," "Georgia On My Mind," "Okie From Muskogee," and "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys." His set finished with "I'll Fly Away," which saw him joined by Dave Matthews, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and other musicians, including Shelby Lynne, whose powerful vocals nearly stopped the show.
Neil Young spent part of his set encouraging the audience to become organic farmers, and to buy organic produce. His set included his wife Pegi on backup vocals for several numbers, and on guitar at one point. Willie Nelson joined him to sing "Homegrown."
Dave Matthews played a solo acoustic set, and John Mellencamp played a set of his classics.
Steve Earle performed a cover of Pete Seeger's anti-war song "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"
Los Lonely Boys appeared, performing "How Far Is Heaven," "Outlaws," and other tunes.
Jerry Lee Lewis played a short set, and was joined by Willie Nelson for "Jambalaya."
Other artists appearing on the bill included Gov't Mule, Steel Pulse, Alison Moorer, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra, Pauline Reese, and Danielle Evin.
Arlo Guthrie, who was announced to appear, was unable to perform due to illness.
