Former publicist defends Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney's former publicist Geoff Baker has come to his defense against abuse allegations brought by his estranged wife Heather Mills. Baker spoke to Britain's News Of The World and defended his former boss against Mills' accusations in her divorce petition, which includes both verbal and physical abuse against her.
Some of Geoff Baker's statements in response to Mill's allegations:
On Macca physically abusing Mills while on tour: "If Paul really had grabbed Heather and pushed her over a coffee table, you can guarantee I would have heard (about it.) There were 198 people on that tour and it would have gone round like wildfire."
On Macca becoming violent towards Mills while high on marijuana: "As I and anyone else who smokes marijuana knows, one of the things that it doesn't do is make you violent. It has the opposite affect, that's why people smoke it. On the occasions that Paul smoked, he just became very giggly and amusing. I have never heard him get angry after taking marijuana."
On Macca not providing handicapped accessibility for Mills, which resulted in an occasion where she was forced to climb on her hands and knees on to a plane: "That allegation is laughable. While I worked for Paul, everything was changed to accommodate Heather's needs. When were in America on tour, Paul would even lend her his private jet so she could pursue her own business interests in other parts of the States while Paul prepared for a gig. Even my deputy Paul Freundlich was given to Heather to help her do her promotions."
On Macca telling Mills to stop breast feeding their then-infant daughter Beatrice, stating to her, "They are my breasts. I don't want a mouthful of breast milk": "Who is she talking about? That's not Paul. There is no way he would say such a thing. When Heather claims Paul tried to prevent her breast-feeding, this is the same man who had three children with Linda. She always said how much she and Paul wanted everything to happen so naturally. So what Heather is saying is again all bullshit."
On Macca attacking Mills with a shard of broken glass after throwing wine bottle at her: "To accuse Paul McCartney of attacking a woman and stabbing her with a broken glass is ludicrous. I have seen him under massive pressure. He was attacked by a fan once in Germany and didn't even raise a hand. It is just not f***ing true."
Baker added that, "All Paul has ever done is sing songs of love. But unfortunately he married a woman who doesn't know what love is and she is trying to destroy him."
Baker, who was close friends with McCartney's first wife, the late Linda McCartney, did publicity for McCartney, and occasionally for the Beatles, from 1989 until 2004. Baker claims that Mills demanded he be fired due to unprofessional behavior, including marijuana use. Baker now edits the Golf Course News International trade magazine and has no professional ties to McCartney.
In other McCartney-divorce news:
In a survey about the divorce taken by the British news channel Sky News, 75 percent of participants said that they side with McCartney, with only 25 percent saying they think Mills is being honest about the collapse of their marriage.
British celebrity publicist Max Clifford told cbsnews.com that Mills is hardly eliciting the sympathy vote from the public: "Paul McCartney is extremely popular. Heather Mills has never been anything but extremely unpopular and, I think, as the last few months have unfolded, her popularity has gone down even further than it was, if that is possible."
McCartney and Mills, who separated last May, have been married for four years. The couple is currently sharing custody of their daughter Beatrice, who turns three on October 28th. McCartney has yet not directly commented on the specifics of Mills' testimony.
