Kinks leader honoured as BMI icon
Kinks leader Ray Davies was honored as a BMI Icon, at the publishing and performance rights organization's annual London awards ceremony, held Tuesday (October 3rd ). Icon status is given to people who have had "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers."
Davies also hinted to BBC 6 Music that he might work again with his brother and fellow Kinks member Dave Davies, whom he hasn't performed with in ten years, on his latest album: "I'm trying to track down my brother, see how he's doing. Maybe he could guest on a few tracks. But we'll see... I spoke to him before I went on my last tour in America, and he's really on the mend. He's playing again, so it's a good sign." Dave Davies suffered a stroke in 2004, and has slowly been recovering.
Earlier this year Ray told us that he had been discussing working with Dave again, if they both felt it was right: "I think what we'll do, we'll sit down and see if there's any music we feel is relevant, relevant to do, and if so we'll go into the studio and record it and maybe play dates. I never say never."
As the chief songwriter of the Kinks, Davies wrote such enduring classics as "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting For You," "A Well Respected Man," "Sunny Afternoon," "Lola," "A Rock N Roll Fantasy," and "Come Dancing."
BMI is an American group, but they hold a ceremony in London every year to honor the European songwriters and publishers who've had the most success on U.S. radio and TV in the past year. Steve Winwood and Van Morrison have previously been named Icons at the London event.
