Pete Townshend syas he still writes specifically for his audienc

Pete Townshend says that he considers the Who's fans his greatest inspiration, now more than ever. Townshend, who is out on the road with the band, answered fans' questions posted in The Des Moines Register. When asked how if sex, drugs, spirituality, and rock and roll are still important subjects in his music, Townshend explained that, "I still see them as shadows of everyday life... most importantly the way they function for the rock audience. Different people need different things from the artists they allow into their lives."

The guitarist went on to explain that, "I am not trying to set myself up as an authority on sex, drugs, spirituality or rock, I just know that these four facets of life seem to be more important to most Who fans than politics."

During the Who's press conference this summer to announce their U.S. tour, Townshend explained that very early on he realized that much of his material was dictated by his audience's experiences: "What we suddenly realized is that we weren't speaking for our audience, out audience were telling us what to say. Now that's a very different process. And it's one that I discovered when I was very, very, young. It's one that I continue to honor today. So what I'm trying to do... When people say to me, 'Hey Pete, your songs are very personal, how do you think that Roger (Daltrey) can feel about singing them?' Roger can sing them because they're not personal at all. My songs are your songs."

The Who performed on Thursday, October 5th, in Calgary at Pengrowth Saddledome. After their October 11th gig in Seattle, the band will head back to the UK for a single London show and a three week break.

The Who's first studio album in 24 years, titled Endless Wire, will be released on October 31st.

They'll kick off their next set of U.S. dates on November 4th at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl.
