34th Annual American Music Awards
The Black Eyed Peas, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige and country act Rascal Flatts were the big winners at last night's (November 21st) 34th Annual American Music Awards -- but no-shows seemed to be the trend of the evening. The Black Eyed Peas accepted their three trophies via satellite from Costa Rica where they were scheduled to play a show, and the Chili Peppers, who scored two awards, appeared on the show from London. Clarkson's two awards were presented before the televised show began, but Rascal Flatts and Blige were both on hand to accept their two trophies.
Beyonce opened the three-hour event in a black and gold sequined mini-dress and singing her new single "Irreplaceable." Meanwhile, her boyfriend, Jay-Z, came out of his three-year "retirement" with a performance of "Show Me What You Got," the lead single from his new album Kingdom Come.
But the real surprise of the night was an appearance by the newly-single and svelte Britney Spears, who sported a cream-colored spaghetti-strapped dress. Host Jimmy Kimmel introduced her as the "new bachelorette," before she introduced the nominees for Favorite Female Soul and R&B Artist. Immediately before Spears graced the stage, a Kevin Federline look-alike was lowered from the ceiling and packed up in a wooden storage crate. Video footage then showed him being sent off on a truck, driven to a dock, and dropped into the ocean.
SHOW PERFORMANCES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
Jimmy Kimmel started things off by poking fun at Snoop Dogg's recent arrests, joking with the crowd, "I'm glad you made it through security, including Snoop Dogg."
Kimmel mentioned how big of a year 2006 was for music, joking, "We saw debut albums from Paris Hilton and Kevin Federline -- both so talented." He then called K-Fed a "no-hit wonder."
American Idol champ Carrie Underwood beat out rapper Chamillionaire and the Pussycat Dolls for Favorite Breakthrough Artist. She performed several hits off her 2005 debut Some Hearts.
The Pussycat Dolls performed their smash hit "Buttons."
Nelly Furtado sported a white dress and sang "Say It Right," the new single from her third album, Loose.
Grey's Anatomy stars Isaiah Washington, Kate Walsh and Justin Chambers were on board to present an award.
British act Snow Patrol performed "Chasing Cars."
New mom Gwen Stefani premiered her new song "Wind It Up" from her upcoming sophomore album, The Sweet Escape.
Jimmy Kimmel wheeled out a massive bassinet that housed Flava Flav, wearing baby gear and holding a bottle.
The Dixie Chicks performed "Easy Silence," from their new album Take The Long Way.
Josh Groban sang and played piano on "February Song," from his new album Awake.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass of Tenacious D sang and plugged their movie, In The Pick Of Destiny, which opens in theaters today (November 22nd).
Mary J. Blige performed "We Ride (I See The Future)," a new song from her upcoming retrospective album, Reflections.
Nicole Richie introduced her father Lionel Richie's performance, which got nearly everyone out of their seats. Richie did a medley of his new single "Call It Love" and his 1983 hit "All Night Long (All Night)."
Fall Out Boy performed "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race."
Country hit-makers Rascal Flatts did their version of "Life Is A Highway," from the movie Cars.
Jamie Foxx gave a heartfelt introduction to his song "Wish U Were Here," resulting in a standing ovation. He won his first American Music Award --
for Best Soul-R&B Male Artist -- and sent a "shout out" to his family in the audience, including his biological mother, whom he said he hadn't seen in several years.
Barry Manilow sang "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "What The World Needs Now," two songs from his new album, The Greatest Songs Of The Sixties.
John Mayer performed his new single "Waiting On The World To Change."
Presenters Tori Spelling and Clay Aiken mocked the American Idol's star's recent visit to Live With Regis & Kelly, where he covered Kelly Ripa's mouth with his hand while she was talking.
Akon closed out the show with "I Wanna Love You Forever" and "Smack That." He was then joined on stage by Snoop Dogg.

THE SCENE BACKSTAGE:
AMA winner Nickelback said they were thrilled to be getting recognition for their work, but feared their fame might make them a target of host Jimmy Kimmel, who skewered Kevin Federline in the opening sketch by seeming to have him boxed up and tossed off a pier: "(Ryan Peake) Ah, it's just, you know, usually people get their fifteen minutes of fame and we've just been trying to extend ours as long as we possibly can. And to be able to do what we do for a living is, you know, we're pretty lucky. (Chad Kroeger) I'm glad Jimmy Kimmel didn't put us in that box. (Peake) Drop us in a frigging river? (Kroeger) Next year we might be in Jimmy's box." .
Jamie Foxx says that he was really disturbed by the recent incident where comic actor Michael Richards spewed the "n-word" at a heckler during a recent standup gig. He said: "If I was in the audience I would have went on stage and just took the mike from him and said, 'Yo, you need to take a nap. You need to take a nap because you got a lot of things going on inside you.' And what's sad about it ... And I made some comments about it, just as a comment like, 'yo, I would have whipped him on sight.' But at the same time it's sad to see a person build such a career like that and have it torn down because of some things he was going through. Because everybody loved his character, and eventually I'm sure some type of way he'll come back in. But it's sad to see it come out so ugly like that."
Snoop Dogg noted that he enjoyed performing on the show with Akon, then gave props to producer Dick Clark for keeping hip-hop as part of the annual awards presentation. He said: "Akon is a fly artist, tonight we had a good time on stage, I'm glad the American Music Awards let real hip-hoppers on stage tonight. Jay-Z got down and did his thing, they let me do my thing, it was a real situation tonight, we appreciate that. Dick Clark Productions -- I'm down with Dick Clark till the wheels fall off because Dick Clark stayed down for me in '93 when ABC and nobody wanted Snoop Dogg on American Music Awards. So I want to thank you, Dick. Keep your head up wherever you are, OG."
Carrie Underwood says that there are no bad feelings between herself and Faith Hill after the Country Music Awards. Hill had been seen backstage pantomiming outrage when she lost a CMA trophy to the young American Idol star. Underwood says that Hill called to apologize, but the incident was blown out of proportion: "She's always been super sweet to me in the past so I never would have thought anything bad of her because she's such a nice person. But she just wanted to apologize and say that she was sorry for anything that would have seemed inappropriate when it was just a joke gone bad. We were good, like, the night it happened and then it just blew up and I felt so bad for her 'cause she is, like I said, so nice."
Mario Lopez says he's not upset with his second place showing on Dancing With The Stars. He says he always liked dancing, and thought winner Emmit Smith was great. He adds that he would have given the disco ball trophy to his mom: "I always did. I would have voted for Emmit, I like him. He's a great guy. Yeah, I would have liked to have given it to my mom, but you just go out there and do your best and that's all I did, was out there."
Teen singer Jo-Jo said she was happy to see Britney Spears make an appearance as a presenter. She added that even with time off for babies and a messy divorce, there's a great future for Spears: "For Britney yeah, definitely. She looked awesome tonight. And I met her when I was seven or eight. She's very talented, you know, she's still young, still a young lady, so I think she has the opportunity to come back."
