Bob Seger kicks off tour with marathon concert

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band opened their 2006 tour last night (November 8th) at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For their first show in nearly 10-and-a-half years, Seger and company pulled out all the stops with a 24-song, two-hour-and-10-minute marathon.

The band -- which was expanded to 13 Silver Bullets with the addition of a four-piece horn section -- gave the sold-out crowd of nearly 13,000 a healthy sampling of Seger's new album Face The Promise, playing seven songs including the singles "Wait For Me" and "Wreck This Heart." But it was that old-time Seger rock-and-roll the crowd came to hear, and he offered it in abundance, from the opening numbers "Roll Me Away" and "Tryin' To Live My Life Without You" to favorites including "Katmandu," "Night Moves," and "Hollywood Nights."

Among the special moments were the first-ever performance by Seger and the band of "C'est La Vie," the Chuck Berry song he recorded for his first Greatest Hits album back in 1994; a two-song unplugged-style segment with "The Answer's In The Question" that had backup singer Laura Creamer doing country star Patti Loveless's duet part, and the rarely performed "Sightseeing" from 1991's The Fire Inside; and an especially effective pairing of "We've Got Tonight" and "Turn The Page."

Seger, who worked hard enough to sweat through several headbands, made frequent mention of his age, and he even changed the lyric of the last song he played, "Rock And Roll Never Forgets," from "Sweet 16's turned 31" to "Sweet 16's turned 61."

The next date for Seger and the Silver Bullet Band is on Friday, November 10th, in Saginaw, Michigan.
