Orleans leader not bothered by opponent's charges in congressional campaign

Orleans leader John Hall has been campaigning hard over the past few months in what has become a very close political race. Hall is running on the Democratic line against incumbent Republican Congresswoman Sue Kelly to represent New York's 19th District, which spans several communities and counties in the suburbs north and west of New York City. The Kelly campaign has tried to show Hall as being out of touch with the mainstream, but he told us that he's very much like the people in the district he hopes to represent: "There have been a few (people), you know, going back to my county legislature campaign, who said that I was a 'limousine liberal,' and that I was a 'weirdo rock star,' and that... you know, I mean, whatever. But the fact is I'm a father, I'm a citizen, I'm a small business owner -- you know, Orleans is a small business. We started that back in 1972, and, you know, managed, for the most part, to stay afloat and be successful over the years."

Back in 1989, Hall was elected to the legislature in Ulster County, New York, and he's also served two terms on the Board Of Education in Saugerties, New York. While on the Board Of Ed, he was elected president by his fellow trustees.

Musician friends including Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, and Bonnie Raitt have helped raise funds for Hall's campaign this year.
