U2 making 3-D concert
U2 plans to release its first 3-D concert film next year, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie, which will comprise footage from the group's visit to seven South American cities on its Vertigo world tour, is tentatively slated to premiere in mid-to-late 2007. The band might promote its release by participating in the first 3-D live performance projected in theatres around the country. Directors Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington shot more than 700 hours of footage during the band's South American concerts last February and March, which included stops in Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Mexico.
Pellington, who has directed movies such as The Mothman Prophecies, launched his career by directing U2's "One" video.
The film's producers boasted that the shoot required the largest collection of 3-D camera technology ever used for a single film.
Talks are underway with several major studios to distribute the film, which will employ the same 3-D projection technology currently being used to screen the reissue of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
