Paul McCartney planning Liverpool themed musical
Paul McCartney is planning a stage musical version of his 1991 Liverpool Oratorio. Britain's Sunday Telegraph reported that McCartney's cousin, actress Kate Robbins, is spearheading the project, with McCartney serving as the still-unnamed show's musical director. Robbins, best known for her role on the British comedy show Spitting Image, admitted that the collapse of her and McCartney's respective marriages have held up the musical's progress, explaining that, "The project has been delayed by divorce worries."
Early word is that although the show will aim for a run in the West End of London, Macca might choose to open the show in 2008 during Liverpool's year as the European Capital of Culture.
Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio, cowritten with Carl Davis, was McCartney's first full-scale classical piece and was commissioned by the city of Liverpool. The piece, which has been performed all over the world, topped numerous classical album charts all over the globe, including the U.S.
The Liverpool Oratorio, which is based loosely around the lives of McCartney's parents Jim and Mary, and his marriage to his late wife Linda McCartney, centers around a fictional Liverpool couple Shanty and Mary Dee.
Kate Robbins has remained close with McCartney over the years: "Paul is a real family man. He bought me my first piano and helped me get my first record deal. We are known as the Liverpool showbiz mafia. In our home growing up, even the sewing machine was a Singer."
Robbins has sung on several McCartney songs, including his last Top Ten hit, 1985's "Spies Like Us," and the following year's album, the critical flop Press To Play.
