Pearl Jam, Green Day frontman join U2
Pearl Jam and Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong joined U2 at the closing show of the Irish band's Vertigo world tour on Saturday night (December 9th) at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder and guitarist Mike McCready came onstage for an encore of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," while Armstrong appeared for "The Saints Are Coming," the Skids cover that his band and U2 recently recorded and performed live in New Orleans for the Music Rising hurricane relief charity. Pearl Jam also warmed up the crowd in a rare turn as an opening act, ending its hits-heavy set with the Who's "Baba O'Riley."Several fans also came onstage, including one man who played piano during "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses."
The members of Pearl Jam had previously played "Rockin' in the Free World" with U2 at a recent anti-poverty benefit concert in Australia.
U2's Vertigo tour, which began in the spring of 2005, is the second highest-grossing road trip of all time behind the latest Rolling Stones trek, with total earnings expected to pass $377 million.
The band hopes to release its next studio album in late 2007 and return to the road sometime in 2008.
