Syd Barrett auction brings in $230k
Items belonging to the late Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett were auctioned off yesterday (Thursday, November 30th) in Cambridge, England, for more than $200,000. The auction included paintings, furniture, a stool, an artificial Christmas tree, and two bicycles, which Barrett rode around Cambridge on during the years after his time in the band. The bikes, which were hand-painted by the guitarist, drew the most interest and went for about $20,000. Barrett's family has said that part of the proceeds from the auction will go to fund art education programs.
At Christmas, singer-guitarist David Gilmour, who grew up with Barrett, will release three live recordings that are dedicated to his old friend: an acoustic cover of the song "Dark Globe," from Barrett's debut solo album The Madcap Laughs; and two versions of Pink Floyd's first single "Arnold Layne," one with Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright on vocals, and one with David Bowie. Both were recorded in May at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Barrett died on July 7th, 2006, at age 60.
