Tool singer says he has "no idea" who his fans are
Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan admitted in an interview with satirical newspaper The Onion last week that he has trouble relating to the group's fans nowadays. When asked whether he felt out of touch with the band's audience, Keenan replied, "For the most part, I have no idea who those people are -- especially when we're traveling through Europe...(you play) heavy music, and your record company, which has never owned an album anything like what you're doing, immediately markets you to the obvious stinky kid with the dreadlocks and the B.O. and the urine on his shoes because he's been sleeping in his own filth in a festival in the middle of the rain...And then you realize the only people showing up to your shows are those primates -- these weird, cretin people."
Keenan was also apparently disillusioned by the response to eMOTIVe, a collection of political cover songs he released with A Perfect Circle at the time of the 2004 presidential election. He explained, "I was crucified because of its content, because there's an army of little f***ing brats out there just going into every little chat room, talking s*** and undermining anybody who has anything to say. It's like this insane, 1984/Big Brother infrastructure."
Nevertheless, Keenan said he's "absolutely surprised and grateful" at the success that Tool has continued to have, although he added, "But you know, I'm the negative-Nancy, curmudgeon, glass-half-empty-with-a-leak-in-it guy...Without that, we wouldn't have me."
The complete interview can be read at TheOnion.com.
Tool continues to tour in support of its fourth studio album, 10,000 Days, which has sold 1.3 million copies since its release last May. The CD's latest single is "The Pot."
Tool is currently in the midst of a two-month European trek. The group will headline Australia and New Zealand's Big Day Out festival in early 2007 before launching another North American jaunt in mid-March.
