Fall Out Boy and Gnarls Barkley singers doing songwriting panel
Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump and Gnarls Barkley vocalist Cee-Lo Green are participating in a panel discussion called "How I Wrote That Song," which will take place at the Key Club in Los Angeles on Saturday, February 10th at 2 p.m. PT. The event is part of the festivities surrounding the Grammy Awards, which will be presented the following evening (Sunday, February 11th). The panel will provide what a press release described as "an inside look at the creative process, featuring performances of hit songs by each panelist and a Q&A session on the business of songwriting and music." Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster or at keyclub.com.
Patrick Stump told us that the idea for a song can come from almost anywhere, like it did for Fall Out Boy's current single, "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race": "I was producing a record for this band the Gym Class Heroes. I was coming up with beats, and I had this beat that just didn't work for them at all. And as I was screwing around with it, I realized that it sounded like my band, kind of (laughs). So I was like, 'Ah, I'll just flush it out as a Fall Out Boy song.' And the song kind of wrote itself after that, 'cause the groove, I feel, is like real strong."
The panel is being sponsored by performance royalties organization BMI and the Los Angeles Times.
Other songwriters and musicians expected to participate include Butch Walker, producer Dallas Austin, Nashville composer Jeffrey Steele and others.
Fall Out Boy releases it new album, Infinity On High, on February 6th. Gnarls Barkley is currently on the road with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
