New Democratic leaders of House and Senate are big Grateful Dead fans
The two highest-ranking Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill have been revealed to be fans of the Grateful Dead.
In a New York Times article that discussed a Democratic fundraiser in Washington, D.C., on January 4th, new Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's spokeswoman is quoted as saying, "'Ms. Pelosi is a huge Dead fan." The fundraiser cost $1,000 per person, and featured performances by Tony Bennett, Carole King, Wyclef Jean and the surviving members of the Grateful Dead.
Pelosi is a Democratic U.S. Representative from San Francisco, which was the home of the Grateful Dead. She is the first woman to ever hold the office of Speaker of the House.
In early December, a Las Vegas television station ran a piece about incoming Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, in which the Nevada Democrat gave a tour of his house, and showed off his "prized possession" hanging in a bathroom -- a signed poster of the Grateful Dead.
