Pantera drummer talks collaboration with Mudvayne members
Former Pantera and Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul has spoken in the new issue of Revolver magazine about Hellyeah!, the new band he's joined with Mudvayne singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett. Paul said that he had turned down offers from several other groups when Hellyeah! and Nothingface bassist Jerry Montano asked him to join the project. Paul explained, "He called me over and over, and one night he caught me when I'd been drinking and listening to some music and I was in the right frame of mind. So I said, 'You know what, man? I might as well at least give this thing a fucking shot and see what happens."
As for the sound of the band's debut CD, Paul said, "It's a really diverse and fresh album. To me, it doesn't sound like Pantera, Damageplan, Nothingface or Mudvayne. It's a new sound with a familiar groove, and having that kick-ass groove there was the most important thing."
The entire Hellyeah! interview appears in the new issue of Revolver, which arrives on newsstands this week.
Hellyeah!'s self-titled debut album is set for release on April 10th. The group has posted audio samples of two songs at its MySpace page and is expected to tour once the album hits the streets.
