Producers of Edie Sedgwick biopic counter Bob Dylan's defamation claims

The controversy continues between Bob Dylan and the makers of a new biopic of Andy Warhol's protege Edie Sedgwick. Dylan's lawyers have told the makers of the recently released film Factory Girl that it includes a character that they consider "defamatory" to Dylan, even though the character's name is changed. In the film, Sedgwick's relationship with the fictional "Billy Quinn" is alluded to be the main reason for her fatal drug overdose in 1971.

The New York Post now reports that in order to defend themselves against defamation charges by Dylan, the Weinstein Company, which produced the film, has filmed testimony from Edie Sedgwick's brother Jonathan Sedgwick, discussing intimate details about Edie's relationship with Dylan.

On the tape Jonathan explains that Dylan indirectly was one of the key factors in Sedgwick's eventual death recalling that, "She told me she was totally in love with him... She also explained (that) she lost a child which she claims was Dylan's child. She had gotten into an insane asylum, and she was so wacked out on drugs that they aborted her because the child would've been just strung out... She said that was the saddest moment of her life."

He went on to add that, "(Edie's) biggest joy was with Bob Dylan, and her saddest time was with Bob Dylan, losing the child. And Edie was changed by that experience, very much so."

Edie Sedgwick starred in such Andy Warhol films as Vinyl, Chelsea Girls, Poor Little Rich Girl, and The Andy Warhol Story. Several mid-'60s Dylan songs including "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Just Like A Woman" have been rumored to have been written about Sedgwick, although any romantic relationship between the two has always been in dispute.

Factory Girl is playing in select theaters now.
